Busey nips at ‘Tomcats’ for Roth shingle debut

O'Connell, Elizabeth to topline pic

Jake Busey is in final negotiations to play the third lead in “Tomcats,” the first go picture for Joe Roth’s still-unnamed shingle.

Lensing is slated for a June 5 start in Los Angeles. Jerry O’Connell (“Mission to Mars”) and Shannon Elizabeth (“American Pie”) have inked deals to topline.

Pic will be exec produced by Roth, with Tony Ludwig and Alan Richie producing via their Eagle Cove Prods. Gregory Poirier, who penned “Gossip” and “Rosewood,” wrote the screenplay and makes his directorial debut.

Here comes the greed

Story centers on seven friends who years ago bet that they each would be the last to marry. Seven years pass and the money wagered, invested wisely, has become a sizable pot. Busey’s character and one other man are the only men still single. Since the other man is a cartoonist needing money, he recruits a dream girl from Busey’s past to drag Busey toward marriage and thereby win the pot for himself.

Busey has appeared in such films as “Starship Troopers” and “Home Fries.” He recently starred in the UPN series “Shasta” and will appear with Jamie Foxx in Trimark Pictures’ “Held Up.” He made his feature film bow in “Straight Time,” with his father, Gary Busey, and Dustin Hoffman.

Busey is repped by Michael McConnell Management Group and Paradigm.
