Pic to start prod'n on post-apocalyptic tale in February or March
Rob Bowman, who directed “The X-Files” feature pic, will assume the reins of the actioner “Reign of Fire” for Spyglass Entertainment.
Disney-based company, which will fully finance the pic, plans to start production in February or March.
Matt Greenberg rewrote an original script penned by Gregg Chabot and Kevin Peterka. Producers are Richard Zanuck and Lili Fini Zanuck, with Spyglass co-toppers Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber exec producing. Co-producers are Jon Glickman and Dean Zanuck.
Veep of production Derek Evans brought “Reign” to Spyglass. At Disney, Buena Vista Motion Picture Group president Nina Jacobson will oversee its development along with Jason Reed, the studio’s veep of production. Evans and Spyglass prexy of production Glickman will spearhead for the shingle.
Story is a post-apocalyptic effects actioner in which an American and his team joins a twentysomething Brit to defeat a brood of dragons that has re-established dominance over the earth.
Bowman is an experienced small-screen helmer who has directed episodes of the “The X-Files”; his first feature directing outing was Fox’s bigscreen adaptation of the show. The film grossed $84 million domestically. Bowman had been attached to direct “I Am Legend,” set up at Warner Bros., before accepting the “Reign” gig.
Spyglass, which financed “The Sixth Sense” and whose recent releases include “Shanghai Noon” and “Keeping the Faith,” begins production Aug. 8 in Ireland on “The Count of Monte Cristo.” The company’s snowboarding pic, “Ten to One,” goes before the cameras in mid-October.
