John Malone’s Starz pay-TV network has begun producing “On the Set,” an original series that will go behind the scenes of forthcoming theatricals. Series will premier on Encore, the sister pay-TV network of Starz.
The first half-hour episode, to kick off June 4, will focus on the Nicolas Cage movie “Gone in 60 Seconds.” The second half-hour, scheduled for June 25, deals with “The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle,” the live-action-cum-animation movie with Robert De Niro and Rene Russo.
Starz will hype movies from the studios it has exclusive output deals with, such as Touchstone (which will distribute “Gone in 60 Seconds”) and Universal (“Rocky & Bullwinkle”).
In another deal, Starz has bought the sequel to the 1981 animated sci-fi movie “Heavy Metal.” Called “Heavy Metal 2000,” the epic adventure features a soundtrack saturated with hard-rock music. The co-creators of the movie are Kevin Fastman and and Simon Bisley. Co-produced with Columbia TriStar, the movie is directed by Michael Coldewey and Michel Lemire.
