'Election's' Witherspoon named best actress

NEW YORK — “American Beauty” took home best film honors from the Online Film Critics Society, while star Kevin Spacey downloaded the best actor award. The prize was Spacey’s first in the myriad of year-end critics’ awards.

Overall, DreamWorks’ sleeper hit won four awards from the 112-member org, including best director and best ensemble.

Reese Witherspoon nabbed best actress for Paramount’s “Election,” with that film also sharing best screenplay honors within USA Films’ “Being John Malkovich.”

“Malkovich” co-star Catherine Keener took home best supporting actress, while “The Six Sense’s” Haley Joel Osment was named best supporting actor.

Artisan’s “Buena Vista Social Club” was named best doc, and Sony Pictures Classic’s “Run Lola Run” ran away with the best foreign lingo film honors.

For the first time, the org gave honors to outstanding movie Web sites. The best official film Web site went to “The Blair Witch Project” with best film review site going to “Roger Ebert on Movies.”

The Internet Movie Database was given a special honor for having strengthened the bond between films and the Internet.
