“American Beauty” is already seeing the material benefits of its five Oscar wins.
DreamWorks’ drama grossed $727,554 on Monday, a day after taking home best pic, best actor and best director trophies. That repped a 132% surge from its total of $313,542 on the same day a week ago.
The post-Oscar start would seem to lend credence to DreamWorks’ projections that the pic will add about $15 million to its domestic tally, which now stands at $109.2 million. (Monday is historically the weakest day of the B.O. week).
Two other Oscar faves, Miramax’s “The Cider House Rules” and Fox Searchlight’s “Boys Don’t Cry,” also saw a B.O. boost. “Cider House” collected $309,000 Monday, up 35% from the Monday before. “Boys” receipts roughly doubled, to $136,000.
