British series features two trendy, middle-aged women
PARIS — In a departure from her usual roles, French film star Nathalie Baye will play the comic role of Patsy Stone in the French movie version of the highly successful British TV series “Absolutely Fabulous,” her percentary Artmedia told Daily Variety. British actress Joanna Lumley originated the role on British TV.
The series centers on two middle-aged, but trendy women friends who have lived through every fad since the peace and love days of the 1960s.
French comic actress and director Josiane Balasko (“Un Crime au Paradis,” “The Libertine”) will be Edina Monsoon and Marie Gillain (“Le Bossu”) will play her straitlaced daughter Saffron.
Gabriel Aghion (“The Libertine,” “Beautiful Mother”) told Daily Variety that turning Baye into a comic character was a challenge.
“It is amusing to see Baye’s transformation. Make-up, hairstyling, clothing are 50% of the role. And Balasko has never played a fashion victim sophisticate before,” he said.
French fashion designer Jean-Paul Gautier is creating Balasko’s costumes and other visuals.
Shooting is to begin in Paris on Nov. 27, and should end in mid-February.
