Fall series to showcase four '99 Oscar nominees

The first installment of the 19th annual Contemporary Documentary Series — presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the Academy Foundation and the UCLA Film & Television Archive — will kick off Oct. 3, with a second series skedded to unfold in January.

The fall series will showcase four 1999 Oscar-nominated docus: “The Wildest Show in the South: The Angola Prison Rodeo,” Oct. 3; “Eyewitness: The Legacy of Death Camp Art,” Nov. 14; “Genghis Blues” and “Buena Vista Social Club,” Nov. 21.

Also set to screen are “Beyond the Mat,” Oct. 3; “Just a Wedding” and “American Hollow,” Oct. 17; “The Last Guy to Let You Down” and “Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter Jr.,” Oct. 24; “Jews and Buddhism: Belief Amended, Faith Revealed” and “Tak for Alt: Survival of a Human Spirit,” Nov. 14; “Growing Up Fast” and “Smoke and Mirrors: A History of Denial,” Nov. 28; “The Art of Norton Simon” and “Keepers of the Frame,” Dec. 5; and “Island of the Sharks,” “Olympic Glory” and “Wolves,” Dec. 12.

All screenings will unspool at UCLA’s James Bridges Theater, except for the Dec. 12 program, which will be held at the Imax Theater. For info, call (310) 206-3456.
