Mocumentary produced by Gotham indie shingle Greenstreet

CANNES — Strand Releasing has taken North American rights to Griffin Dunne’s “Famous,” which is playing in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard.

Strand paid a low-six-figure sum for “Famous,” but will provide roughly $500,000 in prints and advertising for the pic, which will be released early 2001.

Shot on digital video and blown up to 35mm, pic was produced by John Penotti, Fisher Stevens and Brad Yonover’s Gotham-based indie shingle GreeneStreet Films.

Pic is a mocumentary about a young actress in New York, scripted by Nat DeWolf and Laura Kirk, who play the lead roles in the pic.

Project was brought to GreeneStreet by Mira Sorvino, who also produced along with Dolly Hall. She met them in an acting class in New York.

Final deal points are being negotiated by William Morris Agency’s Cassian Elwes on behalf of the producers; John Gerrans and Marcus Hu negotiated on Strand’s behalf.
