Classicmovies.com said Wednesday that it has partnered with Global Media in a deal that will enable the site to charge for the online distribution of classic pics and related merchandise.
Created by vet international film distrib Gary Dartnall, site has acquired the Web rights to 700 pics (through Dartnall-owned library the Douris Corp.) including those from Alfred Hitchcock, Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks, and plans to broadcast them via Global Media’s high-speed network for a fee.
The site also will enable viewers to buy merchandise including CDs, videos, DVDs and books featuring pics from the silent era to the present.
“A movie doesn’t have to be old to be a classic,” Dartnall said. “It’s the film’s quality, longevity and universal appeal that grants it that status.”
Global Media uses RealNetworks’ RealPlayer software to build a platform for clients interested in creating their own branded system to broadcast video online and incorporate e-commerce offerings.
Company recently inked a deal to distrib AccuWeather’s info online through a series of sites.
