HOLLYWOOD — Universal Pictures has launched an online competition in connection with its upcoming Hitchcock International Director Series.
The studio announced that its reelshort.com will conduct online viewing and voting through June 12 with the five top nominees screened on June 25 at the American Cinematheque in Hollywood. Universal announced earlier this year it had taken an equity stake in New York-based reelshort.com to take advantage of the growing platform for young filmmakers.
“I’m delighted that this year we have the opportunity to maximize our involvement with this important series by bringing on board our newest partners,” said Universal Pictures chairman Stacey Snider.
The June 25 event will include naming of the winning film and a panel discussion with the filmmakers.
The series, now in its second year at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, will run from June 23 through 27 and include the Los Angeles premiere of “Tierra Del Fuego,” a drama by Miguel Littin; a screening of Gianni Amerlio’s “Lamerica,” for which he won Best Director at the 1994 Venice Film Festival; a screening of “Farewell, Home Sweet Home,” a comedy by Soviet director Otar Ioselliani; and a screening of Hong Kong director Ann Hui’s family comedy “Summer Snow.
