Sony joins HDTV club

On the eve of digital HDTV satellite tests, Sony has joined other key Japanese appliance manufacturers in announcing digital HDTV receivers to be marketed on Nov. 25. All other key players — Matsushita, Toshiba, Mitsubishi and Sanyo — have already announced their digital HDTV receiver marketing plans.

Test transmissions of digital satellite HDTV broadcasting by all six terrestrial networks, and satellite operator Wowow and movie web Star Channel will start today , just in time for the Sydney Olympics and three months prior to the full launch of digital satellite HDTV operations on Dec. 1.
