Creative-direction say-so also in new exec's lap

CANNES — Pop.com has named Sofia Sondervan head of acquisitions, overseeing film buys and finding original productions and talent, said John Sloss, partner in POPfest. Sondervan, previously head of acquisitions for Cary Woods’ Independent Pictures, will also be responsible for the creative direction of the site’s specialized programming.

POP.com, one of an army of Internet companies looking for exposure — and product — at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, is a venture of Imagine Entertainment, DreamWorks and Vulcan Venture, the holding company of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

“We are thrilled to have an executive with Sofia’s experience in the industry joining the POPfest team,” Sloss said.

POPfest showcases film shorts, animation and other independently produced material up to a half-hour long, all on a non-exclusive basis. Creators of product will be able to build their own home pages into the site.

Sondervan also briefly acted as a consultant for Sloss Special Projects, where she helped solicit and represent a slate of films at Sundance 2000. She has worked in business affairs at Miramax and in development for the New York Picture Co.
