Depending on who you talk to or what you read, it’s tough to figure out who, including Michael Ovitz, Ron Burkle and Richard Wolpert, is in or out at music, video and vidgame e-tailer CheckOut.com.
In a response to recent reports in other publications, Wolpert stresses he ankled his post as CEO of CheckOut.com’s daily operations in May, when Wherehouse Music completed its takeover of the e-tailing venture. Wherehouse and CheckOut announced that they would merge last year (Daily Variety, Nov. 17).
Wolpert remains on CheckOut’s board as vice chairman. Wherehouse prexy Hugh Hilton is serving as acting CEO.
Since May, Wolpert has been focusing his attention on Chance Investments, the venture capital and Internet consulting outfit the former Disney exec formed. Company has already invested in startups Broadcast Vision, EncodeThis, People Support, Audio Mill, Primelight, SalesMountain.com and AudioHighway.com.
CheckOut is seeking investors to buy out the 51% stake that Ovitz and Burkle’s Yucaipa Cos. owns.
