MIAMI — Latino channel Locomotion, a joint venture between Cisneros TV Group and Hearst, is co-producing original animation exclusively for its Web site.
One of the first original Web productions is “El Santo,” a series created by Mexican artists Jis and Trino. “El Santo” has never been seen before in the form of animation, but its crude humor and irreverent satire have long been featured in comic books and as a weekly strip in Mexico City daily La Jornada.
The other series are “Teevey,” created by British artist Robert Ramsden, and Aussie production “Rudo by Night,” from Eddie Mort and Lili Chin.
Mort and Chin are slated to create other original animation for Locomotion.com.
Locomotion was relaunched in 1999 as a pan-regional all-animation channel with programming from around the world.
Latin America is not a deep source of original animated programs given the expense involved; so far, the region has yet to yield its own Atom Films devoted to producing toons just for Internet auds.
While Locomotion.com provides info on the TV channel, site is designed to function as an animation portal, featuring links to other sites that emphasize animation and making available downloadable animation, said marketing director Andrea Feuermann.
