Icebox.com has inked an exclusive content development deal with Jonathan Katz, the co-creator of Comedy Central’s animated “Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist,” to produce several original series for the Netcaster.
As part of the deal, which marks Icebox’s 55th major content pact to date, Katz will write and produce new animated shows for Icebox, with the first project being “Against the Grain.” Katz will create Webisodes with Tom Snyder, co-creator of “Dr. Katz.”
Icebox, founded by eCompanies, has already inked similar content development deals with creators and executive producers of “Seinfeld,” including Larry David, Chris Keyser & Amy Lippman (“Party of Five”), John Kricfalusi (“Ren & Stimpy”) and Mike Reiss (“The Critic”).
“Jonathan is one of only a handful of successful creators of smart, primetime animated television series,” Icebox CEO Steve Stanford said. “He is an exciting addition to Icebox’s roster of outstanding television and film writers, and we are anxious to see what he will produce when given the creative freedom that Icebox affords its writers.”
While Katz is best known for his Comedy Central strip, the comedian has also appeared in David Mamet’s “The Spanish Prisoner,” “The Independent,” starring Janeane Garofalo and Jerry Stiller, and CBS laffer “Ink.”
“My maternal grandparents met in a chat room, so it only seems right that I should continue what they began more than a hundred years ago,” Katz joked. “In my home, we spoke MS-DOS until I was 8 and then we stopped talking.”
Katz’s deal was brokered by Creative Artists Agency, managers Bonnie Burns and Mary Catherine Tucker and attorney Susan Grode of Katten, Muchin and Zavis.
