Even as the media reads the last rites over crime news site APBNews.com, two pioneers in crime-oriented entertainment announced the launch of a new Web portal for crime-related news and information, to be called simply Crime.com.
The site — which launched Tuesday — is the brainchild of John Langley, creator of the reality-based TV show “Cops,” in conjunction with Court TV.
It will include crime stats for neighborhoods across the country, downloadable video footage of criminal activity and online chats with crime experts. It will also include some short segments of “Cops”-style programming, like amateur video edited and with storylines added.
Site lays off staff
The launch comes just weeks after APBNews.com, a much-lauded site that also focused on crime-related news and information, announced that it would lay off its staff, operating only through the efforts of volunteer staffers.
That site, which boasted the celebrated war journalist Sydney Schanberg among its editors, is now looking for a white knight to provide stopgap financial backing.
However, while APBNews.com focused on original print reporting, crime.com appears to be leaning more toward a multimedia blend of both news and entertainment.
In addition, Crime.com will have the advantage of being able to promote its site on Court TV’s cable network and CourtTV.com, beginning in mid-June. The two companies will also partner to produce original programming for both TV and the Web.
