BSkyB powering up Open to boost online services

Company to increase shops from 22 to 50

LONDON — BSkyB is doubling the broadcast capacity of Open, the satcaster’s e-commerce platform, to make way for more services and keep up with demand.

In tech terms, that means Open’s capacity on the Astra satellite will be upped from 68Mb to 136Mb. By the end of this year, BSkyB plans to raise the number of retail shops accessible through Open to 50 from 22, bringing the total number of interactive services to 90.

Open — which is part of BSkyB’s SkyDigital platform — is now in 2.6 million homes, making it the world’s largest provider of interactive TV.

Of SkyDigital subs, 7% have made a purchase via Open, and 550,000 have registered for its e-mail service.
