Book site gives Mighty money

Barnes & Noble.com invests $20 mil in e-publisher

Barnes & Noble.com dove further into the unchartered waters of e-publishing Tuesday with the announcement that the retailer has invested $20 million in the e-publisher MightyWords. MightyWords content will now be distributed through Barnes & Noble.com’s Web site.

MightyWords’ library consists of more than 10,000 titles, including works from Arthur C. Clarke and Toni Morrison.

The investment was part of a $36 million investment round in MightyWords, also announced Tuesday, with an additional $10 million coming from Vulcan Ventures. MightyWords was previously a subsidiary of Fatbrain.com, an information distribution service for businesses. Fatbrain.com retains both a percentage ownership in MightyWords and rights to distribute Mightywords content.
