Insiders say art director at odds with creative head

NEW YORK — Talk magazine art director Lesley Vinson, who was one of editor in chief Tina Brown’s initial hires, is the latest to ankle the much-scrutinized monthly.

Vinson’s departure comes as the redesigned February issue of Talk, which will feature only one photo on its cover, hits newsstands Jan. 9.

Vinson will be taking with her the crammed, text-heavy layout style that has been heavily criticized since the glossy’s August debut.

According to insiders, Vinson was at loggerheads with newly installed creative director Oliveri Toscani, the former Colors From Benneton creative director who joined Talk a month ago.

Vinson joins a long list of top Talk defectors, including executive editor David Kuhn, managing editor Howard Lalli, features editor Lisa Chase and at-large editor George Hodgman. She is the first to leave the magazine since former St. Martins’ editor in chief Bob Wallace came aboard as editorial director.
