Universal Studios has promoted veteran legal affairs executive Karen Randall to executive vice president and general counsel.
Randall, who joined Universal in 1996 as senior VP and general counsel, will continue to oversee all legal operations for U’s businesses, which employ 15,000. Her responsibilities include labor relations and governmental affairs, and have expanded to cover the health-safety and environment departments.
‘At the forefront’
“During the past few years, Karen and her legal team have achieved significant accomplishments in every area of our business, from intellectual property rights to international joint ventures,” said Ron Meyer, president and chief operating officer. “Her depth and breadth of experience have placed her at the forefront of dealing with global policy, regulatory and Internet strategy developments. We look forward to her continued leadership addressing the emerging legal issues that face our company and our industry into the future.”
During her tenure at Universal, Randall organized the legal department to include experts in litigation, copyright, trademark, executive compensation, benefits and real estate areas. She also works with parent Seagram Co.’s external affairs office in domestic copyright, European Union and intellectual property legislation and global public policy issues.
Her international work includes the United Intl. Pictures charter extension, and reorganization of Universal Pictures Intl.’s legal functions and foreign video distribution operations. She also serves on the boards of UIP and Loews Cineplex, and is Universal’s liaison to the Motion Picture Assn. of America.
Prior to joining U, Randall was the managing partner of the Los Angeles office of Katten Michin Zavis.
