Oxygen inhales N.Y. tax break

Network to expand operations in Chelsea

Geraldine Laybourne’s Oxygen Media cable network will receive a tax break of about $1.54 million from New York City’s IDA (Industrial Development Agency) in exchange for beefing up its Manhattan operations.

In an announcement from the office of Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, the IDA said Oxygen plans to add 36,000 square feet to its operations in the Chelsea area. Oxygen employs 444 people in New York, said the IDA, and the company plans to add another 757 staffers over the next 15 years.

The IDA also says it has agreed to pony up $1.186 million in sales-tax exemptions and energy-cost reductions to Seagram-owned music-recording company UMG Recording to help it set up an e-commerce division, Universal Global E. Unit expects to hire 330 employees by 2015.
