NHK seeks change in data law

Sought-after sat location key to Parliamentary decision

TOKYO — Katsuji Ebisawa, chairman of Japan pubcaster NHK, asked Parliament to change current laws to allow the broadcaster to start a data transmission service on a satellite that takes to the air this summer.

NHK is prohibited by law from operating a data broadcasting business and needs new legislation in order to start the service, which will provide items such as program guides and reference material.

The satellite will be placed in geosychronous orbit at 110 degrees east longitude, which is the same location used for NHK’s current broadcast satellite service.

The 110-degree transmission is being eyed by Japan’s Post and Telecommunications Ministry for a feed that would allow users to receive broadcast satellite channels and the communications satellite Sky PerfecTV via the same dish.
