Internet music player Launch Media said Tuesday that it has acquired musicvid producer and distributor National Video Subscriptions and concert information Web site Tourdates.com in an effort to boost its online content offerings.
Anaheim, Calif.-based NVS licenses its library of 24,000 musicvids from major and indie record labels to retailers, restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, theme parks and airlines on a customizable network.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We are very pleased to be adding NVS to the Launch Media properties,” said Dave Goldberg, CEO of Launch. “With this acquisition we will be able to reach more consumers in the marketplace and have them associate the musicvideo content they are watching with Launch.com.”
Launch said it soon plans to incorporate ads into the video loops of NVS’ vid service as a way for advertisers to target audiences, giving those who want to reach country music fans the ability “to target programs played in country music nightclubs and restaurants,” Goldberg said.
The acquisition of Atlanta-based Tourdates.com will give Launch 85,000 additional members and exclusive local and national concert information that it will provide to its 2 million registered users. Info is compiled from a database of 10,000 bands, concert agencies and promoters around the world.
Deal is valued at $11.6 million in stock.
Launch plans to integrate Tourdates’ community content areas into its own service, including boards where members post concert reviews and allows users to buy, sell or trade tickets.
“The opportunity to match Tourdates.com’s grasp on the live-music scene to Launch’s music content creates an unparalleled content base that is extremely desirable to anyone who wants comprehensive music information,” Goldberg said.
“We have been avid fans of Launch throughout the years and have always looked at them as a model for creating the ultimate online personalized music community,” said Robert Schaefer, prexy of Tourdates.com.
Tourdates has content distribution deals with AOL’s Digital Cities, MP3radio.com, Bellsouth.net and several college Web sites. Launch plans to continue the relationships, adding the partners to Launch.com.
Santa Monica-based Launch compiles artist biographies, album reviews, concert reviews, viewable musicvids and interviews as well as downloadable music on its Web site and monthly CD-ROM-based magazine.
Launch already has inked distribution and content deals with America Online, Microsoft, Intel, Snap, RealNetworks, Road Runner, Sony Music, EMI, Yahoo! and Warner Music.
