BERLIN — Amid speculation over the future of Germany’s two leading theater chains, Cinemaxx and UFA, upstart media house Kinowelt is making noises about entering the plex biz.
Eduard Unzeitig, finance head of Kinowelt Medien, is interested in taking a 25.1% stake in multiplex houses.
Kinowelt runs a number of theaters but is mainly active in licensing and distribution.
The move would be timely considering German exhibs need to find partners to back the huge investments that have gone into the multiplex-building spree of the past several years.
Several alliances have been formed in the recent past, but none with a local distribution player.
Talks are under way with various multiplex operators and a joint venture with Cinemaxx or UFA is one possibility, according to Kinowelt reps.
