MIAMI — Pan-regional satcaster Galaxy Latin America has announced the appointments of Peter Hutchinson as president and Edward Balcerzak as general manager of its Mexican operation, Grupo Galaxy Mexicana.
The two new execs will fulfill the functions of former Galaxy Mexicana CEO Arturo Sardaneta, the former Reader’s Digest Mexico exec who ankled in May after less than a year in the position.
Galaxy Mexicana is a joint venture between Mexican media company Grupo MVS and Hughes Electronics. Hughes is the majority shareholder in pan-regional platform Galaxy Latin America, which it owns with the Cisneros Group of Cos.
Galaxy operates the DirecTV DTH service throughout the region.
Hutchinson is a private consultant specializing in growth opportunities for telecommunications companies. He was previously president of Onexa, managing the Mexican interests in Alestra, a telco joint venture in which AT&T is a partner.
He is responsible for advising Galaxy Mexicana on business strategy and development and long-term planning.
Galaxy Latin America is looking to introduce interactive and other value-added features to its DirecTV service throughout the region.
Balcerzak is responsible for the development and growth of the DirecTV business in Mexico, overseeing day-to-day operations.
Regionwide, Galaxy’s DirecTV DTH service has more than 1 million subscribers, but rival service Sky has a substantial lead in the Mexican marketplace.
Balcerzak had been controller of Galaxy Latin America since 1995.
