Cosmopolitan magazine announced Wednesday that it had surpassed TV Guide to “command the largest newsstand circulation of any magazine in America.” The fem glossy based its claims on the latest ABC fast fax reporting sales of 2 million copies per issue,
But do the numbers of a monthly and a weekly magazine stand up to such a comparison?
Cosmo, a monthly, sells 2 million copies per issue in comparison to TV Guide’s 1.88 million. But TV Guide spokeperson Ari Karpel disputed Cosmo’s math. “You are comparing apples to oranges,” he told Daily Variety. “If you were to take the weekly rating numbers of NBC Nightly News in comparison to 60 Minutes and stated NBC Nightly News is the highest rated show just based on numbers … it doesn’t make sense. Do they count their multiple orgasms that way?”
On newstands, TV Guide sells roughly 7-8 million copies per month.
