Beatnik Inc., the online music firm founded in 1996 by ’80s pop star Thomas Dolby Robertson (“She Blinded Me With Science”), has filed for an IPO.
The San Mateo-based firm aims to raise $63.25 million from the offering, which is being underwritten by Robertson Stephens, CIBC World Markets and U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray. Beatnik plans to use net proceeds from the IPO for working capital and other general corporate purposes.
Noting that most Web sites resemble silent movies, Beatnik has software, applications, production music and sound content that make Web pages interactive by embedding them with sound files that respond to a user’s mouse movements with music and other sounds. Beatnik calls the process “sonification.”
