Barron branching out with $61 mil

Prod'n house to do films, adult dramas, animation

SYDNEY — Perth-based production house Barron Entertainment has clinched a A$100 million ($61 million) five-year production financing pact with Melbourne-based boutique financier Capital Finance.

Subject to approval at Barron’s April shareholders’ meeting, Capital will guarantee a minimum of $12.5 million per year over five years to allow Barron to diversify beyond its core business of kidvid and family fare into films, adult dramas and animation.

Deal effectively replaces a five-year financing and distribution alliance between Barron and ITV franchisee Scottish TV Enterprises, which has fallen apart after just 18 months.

Like most Oz production houses, Barron has struggled with a sluggish local production market and poor global sales environment as its share price hit a nadir last year of just 2¢.
