Tribune Co. announced Monday it will purchase UPN affil WTXX-TV Hartford, Conn. — the third duopoly for the company.
Tribune had owned a 28.5% stake in Tiberius Broadcasting, which owns WTXX’s license, since December 1997. Tribune, which already owns the market’s Fox affil, WTIC-TV, has been operating WTXX under a local management agreement.
The deal, subject to FCC approval and duopoly clearance, will make Hartford the third market where Tribune owns two stations. The company previously announced plans to acquire a second station in Seattle, KTWB-TV, and to purchase Qwest Broadcasting, which would give it a second station in New Orleans, WNOL-TV.
Also Monday, Tribune announced it had closed on its previously announced purchase of WB affil WBDC- TV Washington, D.C.
