WNBC finished first with the New York City Marathon.
In its first year broadcasting the five-borough race, WNBC won its time period Sunday with an 8 rating/20 share from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., surpassing last year’s figures of 6.2/17 when the event aired on WPIX. Overall viewership in New York peaked at 12:45 p.m. with a 12.5 rating/30 share for the quarter-hour.
WNBC has the rights to air the event through 2003. Last year, the Peacock flagship inked a five-year deal worth an estimated $10 million with the New York Road Runners Club for the annual race, which had been a WPIX property since 1994.
As part of the agreement, NBC Sports broadcast a same-day condensed version of the marathon for national consumption.
