UPN learns from Sinclair
UPN has quietly put out feelers to syndie distribs and others regarding new programming to replace the weblet’s weekend afternoon movie showcase — for a price. UPN is understood to be taking a cue from the Sinclair school of broadcasting by betting that syndie distribs, particularly the smaller indies, would pay the weblet for access to a two-hour weekend block carried by the majority of UPN affils.
The Sinclair station group irked major syndies earlier this year with its widely circulated proposal to sell one-hour weekend timeslots on 55 stations for a total of $1 million, yet at least one indie did go for the deal. UPN conceivably could rake in much more with two hours and 100-plus affiliates on board, although the affils would no doubt demand a cut.
