India web to beam Asia-wide

Doordarshan expanding with Pas 4 sat, possible sports net

BOMBAY — The two main channels of India’s state broadcaster Doordarshan are to be beamed Asia-wide via the PAS 4 satellite by the end of March.

Indian information and broadcasting minister Pramod Mahajan said Wednesday that Doordarshan was keenly looking at starting its own sports net to compete for rights with ESPN and Star Sports.

Doordarshan maintains the highest viewership among TV channels in India, with 55 million homes receiving its two channels. Doordarshan’s two national channels are also a must carry on all cable systems.

Doordarshan is also looking at launching a DTH network in India within the next six months.
