Frears to helm BBC’s ‘Liam’

Director returns to roots

LONDON — Stephen Frears, who is completing “High Fidelity” for Disney, is poised for a return to his low-budget British roots, with a deal to direct “Liam” for BBC Films.

“Liam” is an original screenplay by Jimmy McGovern, creator of the “Cracker” TV series.

Pic, which is about a Catholic boy growing up in 1930s Liverpool, starts shooting in March. Germany’s Road Movies and France’s Diaphana are co-financing the project, which will be produced by Colin McKeown and exec produced by Sally Hibbin.

International sales are being handled by the Sales Co.
