Despite recent rating surges, MGM’s syndie newsmag “National Enquirer” is changing its voice. Mike Walker is stepping aside as co-host of the program to make way for former E! anchor James Hill.
Walker was originally brought in as the lone host of the strip, pulling double duty as the senior editor and columnist of the print version of “Enquirer” and as an anchor for the televised version. But in October, after the series averaged a 1.6 rating, producers brought in Susan Campos from NBC News — where she was featured on the “Weekend Today Show” and as an anchor for MSNBC — as co-host and ratings have climbed since the addition.
Walker will now make occasional appearances as a special gossip correspondent while he “returns his attention” to the tabloid.
Hill most recently served as daily news anchor for WFOR after stints as anchor for E! and hosting duties on the Nashville Network for weekly programs “Dancin’ at the Hot Spots,” “Truckin’ USA” and “Video PM.” He also hosted a fitness program for ESPN.
“National Enquirer” pulled a 1.9 rating, according to the latest Nielsen numbers.
