E! expands telepic slate

'Spinning,' 'Dick' being prepped, 'Off-Ramp' first sitcom

Now that E! Entertainment’s first original telepic “Best Actress” has wrapped, the cabler has unveiled a slew of other long and short-form fictional Tinseltown tales for 2000.

Production is skedded to begin on two new telepics, “Spinning Out of Control” and “Becoming Dick,” in the first quarter of the year and will be aired later in the season. In addition, the cabler’s first original sitcom series, “Hollywood Off-Ramp,” has started production and is slated to premiere in June.

The tentatively titled “Spinning” is a comedy from screenwriter Mark Soloman (exec producer of “Newhart”) about an out-of-control sitcom queen and her devoted personal manager whose life may be destroyed by his client’s headline-grabbing behavior. Production will begin in February in Vancouver.

In April, E! will being production on “Becoming Dick,” which follows the life of a struggling New York actor who discovers the formula for success and then has to deal with the consequences. Production starts in April for the comedy, which was penned by “Rugrats” scribe Rick Gitelson.

The channel already has six episodes of anthology series “Hollywood Off-Ramp” in the can. The channel’s first series takes a satirical perspective on the mechanizations of show business from discontented canine actor to life as a slasher film star. Initial episodes have starred thesps ranging from Rita Rudner to Willie Garson.

“Best Actress,” starring Thomas Calabro, Loretta Devine and Maria Conchita Alonso, is slated to air on March 19.
