SEOUL — Disney affiliate DIC Entertainment signed an agreement Tuesday with Ameko Entertainment, a South Korean firm, to co-produce three animation series starting with “Super Duper Sumos.”
This marks DIC’s first attempt to take on a South Korean firm as a co-producer, as opposed to contract work.
Until recoupment of the initial investment, DIC will receive 70% of all income from the venture with Ameko the remainder. Ameko’s share will be 22.5% in perpetuity after recoupment, Ameko president Dong H. Chung said.
One of Chung’s partners in Ameko is animator Robert Scharf, who is president of North American operations. Scharf has made a career for himself repackaging overseas animation for the U.S. market.
Pre- and post-production will be done in the U.S. with the main animation in Seoul.
