Veteran KTLA reporter Stan Chambers was hospitalized Thursday after the news van he was riding in rolled over on State Highway 91 near Riverside as Chambers was en route to cover a high-speed police chase.
Chambers, 76, suffered a gash on his head that required several stitches, and was due to stay overnight at Riverside Community Hospital for observation, a KTLA spokeswoman said. Carlos Quintero, a photographer riding with Chambers, was expected to be released late Thursday.
The KTLA van flipped over at about 11:30 a.m. after the left front tire blew out and the van went into a tailspin, the spokeswoman said. Chambers, an L.A. news legend who’s been reporting for KTLA for nearly 50 years, was described as “smiling and alert” late Thursday.
The freeway pursuit Chambers was chasing unfolded over three hours Thursday morning, at times reaching speeds over 100 mph. The suspected drug dealer surrendered to police at about 12:30 p.m. after his stolen pickup truck ran out of gas near Corona.
