NEW YORK — Longtime “Politically Incorrect With Bill Maher” exec producer Scott Carter is ankling the ABC latenighter to develop programs for the soon-to-launch femme cabler Oxygen.
Carter’s first assignment at Oxygen under a two-year, non-exclusive deal will be to exec produce “Exhale,” a nightly primetime talker to be hosted by Candice Bergen. He’ll also create and produce another weekly program for the cabler.
There’s no word yet on who’ll replace Carter on “PI”; he’s been with the show since it began on Comedy Central in 1993, producing nearly 1,000 segs. Carter will leave when his deal expires in December, but may remain as a consultant, ABC sources said.
ABC recently renewed “PI” until January 2001, a fact which Carter says makes exiting easier for him.
“The show seems to be in pretty good shape,” he told Daily Variety. “It just seemed like a good time to move on. I’ve been tremendously appreciative of the time I’ve had with Bill and the show, but I wanted to try to do something new.”
Bergen’s show is expected to launch around the same time as Oxygen’s Feb. 2 bow. Oxygen and Bergen have agreed to produce 85 segs, after which Carter will begin developing another program for the cabler.
“Exhale” will tape without an aud and feature one or two guests per night, a far cry from the rowdy atmosphere on “PI.” Carter says he welcomes the change. “The kind of people we’ll be talking to are the kind of people I imagine populate Candice’s dinner parties,” he said.
Carter is repped by Endeavor and his lawyer, Nancy Rose.
