Armed robots battle on PPV

Battle Bots duke it out in Vegas

NEW YORK — Viewer’s Choice, the largest distributor of pay-per-view movies and events, is going after boxing and wrestling fans with something new: knock-down, drag-out clashes between mechanical robots armed with hammers, axes, spikes and buzz saws.

Called “Battle Bots World Championship: Bot Bowl 1,” the two-hour PPV event will take place in Las Vegas, where V.C.’s production division INDE will tape it for showing on V.C. Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. It’s the first national exposure for the Battle Bots, which have developed a coterie of aficionados through a busy Internet site.

Engineers who have created these robots will operate them by remote control as the machines try to destroy each other in the ring. Tournament play includes a three-minute, one-on-one clash called the Robot Duel and a free-for-all smashfest among a number of the Battle Bots called the Robot Rumble.
