Salonen to orchestrate; celebs to recite Shakespeare

The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 81st season will kick off Oct. 9 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion with a gala presentation of Mendelssohn’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and celebrity guest recitations from the Shakespeare play.

Music director Esa-Pekka Salonen will orchestrate, and featured orators include Rosie Perez, Peter MacNicol, Alfre Woodard, David Ogden Stiers and the general director of the L.A. Opera, Peter Hemmings.

The black-tie event will begin with pre-concert cocktails and a silent auction offering cruises, airline tickets and a Hungarian dinner prepared by the Philharmonic’s associate principal cellist. Performance will be followed by dinner and dancing in “enchanted forest” surroundings.

The opening will benefit the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Musician’s Pension Fund.
