Peter, Paul & Mary to kick off Fourth fest
Peter, Paul & Mary will be the featured performers at the Hollywood Bowl’s Fourth of July fireworks spectacular concerts, July 2-4. In addition, the Bowl has fleshed out the bills on the new Wednesday jazz and Sunday world music series.A tribute to Henry Mancini, Johnny Mandel and Quincy Jones, featuring singer-pianist Shirley Horn, will close the Lexus Jazz at the Bowl series on Sept. 15. Added to jazz programs: Tolu and Andy Vargas will perform on July 21’s Latin jazz night; violinist Regina Carter will open for Dee Dee Bridgewater on Aug. 4; Take 6 and Dee Daniels will share the stage with Kevin Mahogany on Aug. 18; and guitarists Russell Malone and Mark Whitfield have been added to John Pizzarelli’s concert on Aug. 25. The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra will appear on all the bills. World Festival ’99 has added samba star Sergio Santos to the Brazil Nights program June 26 and 27; Pakistan’s Rahat Fateh Ali Khan will sing in an evening of sacred music traditions Aug. 15; Vera Bila of the Czech Republic will perform at Aug. 22’s Gypsy Passion; and Cape Verdean singer Fantcha will join a night of music in Portuguese on Sept. 12. A July 9-10 fireworks show will be a tribute to “South Pacific’s” 50th anniversary starring Davis Gaines, Marilyn Horne, Justino Diaz and Susan Egan. Gogi Grant and Julie Migenes will sing at the Out of This World concert Sept. 3 and 4. The annual JVC Jazz at the Bowl concert, Aug. 29, will feature Fourplay, Will Downing, Gerald Albright and David Benoit. The annual Playboy Jazz Festival will be held June 12-13. The Saturday lineup will feature Grover Washington Jr., Buddy Guy, Dianne Reeves, Joshua Redman, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross, Chucho Valdes, Ivan Lins and James Carter. Sunday’s sked is Ray Charles, Etta James, Chick Corea and Origin, Boney James, Ray Barretto and Kenny Burrell, Gerald Wilson Orchestra, Afro-Cuban All-Stars, Terence Blanchard and a salute to Cannonball and Nat Adderley.
