‘Marie’ merry but B’way iced

Grosses from 31 shows tumble

As holiday shopping replaced theatergoing in Gotham, Broadway tumbled from the previous week’s Thanksgiving high. Most of the 31 shows on Broadway declined.

Three exceptions were “Tango Argentino,” which rose $12,676; the previewing “Jackie Mason,” which climbed $2,303; and Lincoln Center Theater’s “Marie Christine,” which did a split week of three previews and five regular performances, giving the new musical a $51,814 boost over the previous session. Playing 95.29% cap, it finished with $300,287 out of a possible $518,555. The average ticket was $42.15.

“Dame Edna” and “Putting It Together” registered two of the smaller declines, $3,601 and $3,276, respectively. Barry Humphries’ show took in a total of $290,631 (gross potential, $327,314), its average ticket price climbing to $53.09. The Sondheim review closed the week with $413,937 (g.p., $496,815), its average ticket selling for $61.87.

‘Kate’ says no

Two other recent Broadway entries showed slightly steeper declines. “Kiss Me, Kate” dipped $31,014 to close at $636,042 (g.p., $771,039). “The Price” was down $37,117 to grab a final $155,583 (g.p., $446,768).

The previous week, “Cats” and “Phantom of the Opera” each registered quarter-of-a-million-dollar surges. But what went up came down last week, with “Cats” and “Phantom” declining $202,217 and “$203,644, respectively.

“Waiting in the Wings” came to town, played five previews, earned $242,646 for its efforts and offered no discounts, averaging $63.21 per ticket. Also new was “Minnelli on Minnelli”: four previews earned “$435,280.

“The Lion King” was the only sellout.
