‘Cranes’ lift at New Group

Legiter to bow Oct. 5

Scott Elliott, artistic director of the New Group, announced that Dimitry Lipkin’s “Cranes” will be the first production of the theater company’s 1999-2000 season. Perfs will begin Oct. 5 at the Theatre at St. Clement’s in New York.

A world premiere, Lipkin’s play is set at a Mardi Gras party that reunites two Russian Jewish families from the former Soviet Union. Elliott will direct, with Laura Estermann, Josh Mostel, Amir Sujadi and Amy Whitehouse set to star. Lipkin’s other plays include “Moscow Nights” and “Baton Rouge.”

Later in the season, the New Group will present Marc Wolf’s one-man play “Another American,” about gays in the military, to be directed by Joe Mantello.

The play, which Wolf performs, was in workshop at Vassar College and will be produced in association with David Marshall Grant (“Snakebit”).

A third and final production is yet to be announced.
