MADRID — Damien O’Donnell’s mordant comic drama “East Is East,” about a Pakistani patriarch struggling to maintain family discipline in Salford, England, won the top Golden Spike at the 44th Valladolid Intl. Film Festival (Oct. 22-30).
Linda Basset took the actress prize for her role in the film; Takeshi Kitano won the actor award for “Kikujiro,” which he also directed. Tim Roth’s “War Zone” took the Silver Spike.
A festival for art pics from name directors plus an increasingly important showcase for new Spanish helmers, Valladolid saw the world preems of three local films. The standout was Jose Antonio Quiros’ first feature, “Pidele cuentas al rey,” which won the Audience Award.
