'Ryan,' 'Shakespeare,' 'Trek' acquired under UIP deal

Under its exclusive distribution agreement with United Intl. Pictures, San Marino-based Tricor Entertainment has acquired Vietnamese rights to “Saving Private Ryan,” “Shakespeare in Love” and “Star Trek — Insurrection.”

The company also recently broke ground on a cinema in Hai Phong under its joint venture with Fafilm Vietnam and Evergreen Group/Vision Net Intl.

The new site brings the number of theaters Tricor operates in the Southeast Asian country to 19.

Ticket prices at existing sites in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong and Da Nang have averaged $1.50 per seat. Occupancy rates for the theaters, which average 16-20 shows per week, are in excess of 65%, according to the company.

“These are unprecedented times in Vietnam,” said Craig Darian, Tricor co-chairman, “and we are extremely proud to have been at the forefront of legitimizing a territory which has been plagued with rampant piracy for many years.”
