Some thought Disney might have used a toy abacus to tote up the weekend gross on “Toy Story 2.”
But while the Mouse House may have fudged a bit — as most studios usually do — it still was correct in calling “Toy” the frame’s top pic.
Pixar-animated film edged out Warner Bros.’ “The Green Mile” in latter’s opening weekend, official data showed Monday.
Oscar-oriented “Mile” netted $18 million, but “Toy” totaled $18.2 million for its third straight weekend win.
“I’m very pleased with how the film opened. With one prime show a day, the gross is spectacular,” said Dan Fellman, distrib chief at Warners.
Fellman gave a Sunday weekend estimate of $18.6 million, only to be trumped by Disney distrib chief Chuck Viane, who called $18.7 million for “Toy.”
These are the salad days for the animated sequel, which has grossed $140 million. Disney has won the past six Thanksgiving frames — and watched those pics enjoy a Christmas crescendo.
Original “Toy Story,” for example, had a Christmas week gross that was 75% of its opening week.
“It’s a phenomenon that started with ‘A Little Mermaid’ and ‘Aladdin,’ ” Viane said. “It’s why we really want to have our films available at that time.”
The Mouse House also got a boost from “Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo,” which did $12.2 million in its debut. That’s a fairly big number for an R-rated, potty-mouthed comedy.
On Sunday, Fellman maintained “Mile” was the real winner, but on Monday he declined to talk on the record about rivals’ numbers. Instead, he stressed the pic’s strong exit poll results and long-term prospects.
“The public has spoken and said they like this movie,” Fellman asserted. “It’s going to have wonderful holiday legs, with word of mouth and reviews.” “Mile” should soon surpass the $28.3 million cume of helmer Frank Darabont’s previous effort, “The Shawshank Redemption.”
