Overseas box office follows domestic ways

BVI’s foreign debutante “Toy Story 2″ and “End of Days,” along with UIP’s “The World Is Not Enough,” dominated the overseas box office in a weekend where the competition mostly ducked for cover.

In a $19 million weekend, “The World Is Not Enough” (cume: $42 million) staged eight top-placed bows, each of them the biggest Bond bows ever. The topper was $6.1 million from 658 prints in France, where it was UIP’s best bow of the year.

The James Bond film actioned a cool $1.9 million from 88 Swiss screens, nearly $843,400 from 102 venues in Holland (beating “Tomorrow Never Dies” by 5%, while New Line’s “Legend of 1900″ stiffed), more than $824,500 from 66 cinemas in Belgium (for UIP’s second biggest bow of the year there), almost $590,000 from 45 sites in Finland (that nation’s second biggest bow after “Independence Day”), close to $782,000 from 61 copies in Norway (UIP’s best bow there this year) and over $324,000 from 44 sites in Portugal (UIP’s best 1999 bow there).

“The World Is Not Enough” also took an estimated $729,600 from 111 theaters in Thailand (63% higher than “GoldenEye”) and a projected $1.5 million in Spain, where, in one of the frame’s few head-to-head competitions, Bond came off second best to Arnold Schwarzenegger as “End of Days” earned $1.7 million from 240 prints.

‘End’ terminates competish

In a $12.4 million weekend, BVI’s “End of Days” (cume: $21.7 million) had five top-spot bows, toplined by $4.2 million from 819 prints in Germany (Schwarzenegger’s second biggest bow there after “Terminator 2″); $480,000 from 72 houses in Schwarzenegger’s homeland of Austria (equaling his previous record with “Terminator 2″); $1.3 million from 320 Brazilian screens; and $1 million from 75 houses in South Korea, for that nation’s biggest bow of the year, Schwarzenegger ‘s best perf and BVI’s second largest ever behind “Armageddon.”

“Toy Story 2″ got off to a fine foreign start with five top-placed bows. Pic doubled the original’s bow for Oz’s second biggest animation bow ever with $1.4 million from 202 venues Down Under, where New Line’s “Detroit Rock City,” CTSI’s “Crazy in Alabama” and Fox’s “Brokedown Palace” fizzed and “Three to Tango” took a so-so $300,100 from 104 venues.

“Toy Story 2″ hounded its predecessor out of the record books in Singapore to set a new animation opening record with $391,000 from 32 prints. It drew $209,000 from 42 houses in Malaysia and $126,000 from 44 places in New Zealand, while doubling its predecessor’s take in Argentina with $466,000.

In a $15.4 million weekend, BVI’s “Tarzan” (cume: $146 million) set new records for an animated preem with $1.6 million on 164 screens in Italy, where UPI’s “Being John Malkovich” had a disappointing foreign preem with just $205,100 from 109 venues.

UPI’s “Guesthouse Paradiso” took an OK $922,600 from 293 locales in the U.K., where stablemate “The Clandestine Marriage” tanked, as did Fox’s “Anywhere But Here.”

In Japan, Warner Bros.’ “Wild Wild West” (cume: $97 million) bowed in second spot, behind stayer “The Sixth Sense,” with $2 million from 200 sites, while Fox’s “Fight Club” (cume: $33.1 million) punched $571,786 from previews on 167 Nippon screens.

Fox’s “Entrapment” (cume: $121.5 million) thrilled $390,900 from 131 venues in China, while CTSI’s “The Bone Collector” (cume: $3.2 million) rattled $120,900 from 29 Kiwi prints and stablemate “Random Hearts” (cume: $21.6 million) beat $107,960 and $178,400 from 30 and 45 screens in the Philippines and Turkey, respectively.

UPI’s “Mickey Blue Eyes” (cume: $20 million) took a good $94,600 from 26 Israeli cinemas, while UIP’s “The Haunting” (cume: $83.1 million) spooked a good $160,887 from 18 Greek theaters. UIP’s “October Sky” tanked with just $27,300 from 29 screens in Mexico, where UIP’s “Bowfinger” (cume: $17.7 million) took a poor $233,230 from 159 Mexican locales while pic reaped an even worse $28,360 from 21 Indonesian venues.
