Seventh Art picks up ‘Friends’

Pic is Israel's Oscar submission

Seventh Art Releasing has picked up North American rights to Israel’s Oscar submission, “Yana’s Friends,” from director Arik Kaplun.

Pic is set in Tel Aviv during the Gulf War and highlights the struggles of Russian emigres living in Israel, drawn largely from the Russian-born, Israel-bred Kaplun’s own experiences. Marek Rozenbaum, Moshe Levinson, Anat Bikel and Uri Sabag served as producers, and Semyon Vinokur has a co-writer credit.

The pic has been well-received at international fests, earning prizes at Karlovy Vary including those for best pic and actress, Evlyn Kaplun (also the director’s wife).
