'Sleepy,' 'Beauty' lead in Intl. Press' polling awards

“American Beauty,” “An Ideal Husband,” “The Insider,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and “Titus” led nominations for the Golden Satellite Awards, in the fourth annual polling by the Intl. Press Academy.

Fueled primarily by its tech work, “Sleepy” won eight noms, followed by seven for “Beauty”; the other four nabbed six apiece.

The 240 members of the IPA — representing both domestic and foreign entertainment press — nominate films in 24 categories, with six contenders in each category.

The org also hands out prizes in 10 TV categories and four new-media races.

Competing as motion picture drama are “Beauty,” “Ripley,” “Magnolia,” “Insider,” “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Snow Falling on Cedars.” Motion picture comedy competitors are “Dick,” “Notting Hill,” “Being John Malkovich,” “Election,” “Ideal Husband” and “Bowfinger.”

TV drama series contenders are “West Wing,” “The Sopranos,” “The Practice,” “Law and Order” and “Oz.” For comedy series, it’s “Action,” “Frasier,” “Sex and the City,” “Dharma and Greg” and “Becker.”

Artisan’s “The Blair Witch Project Web site” will receive a prize for contribution to new media; previously announced kudos include Haley Joel Osment, new talent; “Magnolia,” film ensemble; Dale Olson, honorary award for outstanding service to the industry; and Maximilian Schell, the Akira Kurosawa Award for artistic contribution to entertainment.

The awards will be handed out Jan. 16 in the Rodeo Ballroom at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The kudocast will air the following day on Filmbazaar.com.
