'Bride' and 'Wide' wow foreign audiences

In a busy frame overseas over the weekend, “Runaway Bride” wowed German audiences, “Eyes Wide Shut” excited the Italos, “Deep Blue Sea” scared lots of Aussies and Mexicans, and “The Haunting” thrilled folks in Spain, but wasn’t as potent in Japan.

“Big Daddy” had dandy debuts in the U.K. and Brazil, while “The Blair Witch Project” terrorized Brazil and Taiwan, and “Phantom Menace” did gangbuster numbers in Holland, Portugal and Turkey.

Wooing $6.4 million from 826 prints in Germany, “Runaway Bride” posted Buena Vista Intl.’s second-best bow ever in that market behind “Armageddon,” and the third-highest of this year after the “Star Wars” prequel and “The Mummy.”

Austrians enamored

The Julia Roberts/Hugh Grant starrer romanced $795,000 on 85 in Austria (also BVI’s No. 2 preem, 50% better than “Notting Hill”) and abated by just 6% in its soph session in German-speaking Switzerland, tallying $1.3 million.

All told, “Bride” harvested $8.9 million on 1,389 screens in 17 countries, elevating the cume to $34.2 million.

“Eyes Wide Shut” seduced $2.5 million on 300 screens in Italy, an all-time territory record for Warner Bros., against strong competition from local freshman “Tifosi,” which minted $1.6 million on 223 screens in the key cities.

Stanley Kubrick’s sexual drama gave WB its second-highest launch in Greece, raking in $288,000 on 44, while in the Philippines it fetched a fair $126,000 on 31. “Eyes” held second spot in its third round in France for a hearty $6.8 million cume. After a $7.6 million weekend on 2,717 screens in 33 territories, its cume stands at $74.4 million.

Launched Sept. 27 Down Under to cash in on the school vacation, “Deep Blue Sea” caught an estimated $1.8 million on 191 last weekend, for a seven-day total of $3.1 million. Renny Harlin’s thriller opened in pole position in Mexico, chomping $644,000 on 230.

“The Haunting” snared $1.7 million in three days on 216 in Spain, 8% better than “The Jackal” and 52% ahead of “Dante’s Peak,” and $1.8 million in two days on 228 in Japan (13% up on “The Peacemaker.”) Adding in lively debuts in Thailand, Denmark and Finland, Jan De Bont’s pic scored about $7 million over the weekend, and its cume topped $21 million, including South Korea’s $1.7 million in 10 days and the U.K.’s $5.1 million in ditto (off 30%).

‘Daddy’ doings

“Big Daddy” bagged $2.2 million on 411 in the U.K. (including previews) and $553,000 on 220 in Brazil in a $6.1 million weekend on a total of 2,078 screens in 24 markets; cume is $24.8 million.

“Blair Witch” nabbed $940,000 on 191 in Brazil, the fifth-best opening of the year there, and an estimated $215,000 in two days on 13 screens in the Taiwan capital Taipei, where it was second behind “The Sixth Sense,” which dipped by 36% in its soph session for a sturdy $1.3 million to date nationwide.

“Phantom Menace” coined $8.4 million as its cume soared to $397.2 million. It’s just days away from becoming the fifth film in history to cross $400 million. George Lucas’ epic pocketed $1 million in Holland (the second-highest preem in history behind “Jurassic Park,” according to Fox Intl.), $465,000 on 69 in Turkey (also No. 2 after “The Matrix”) and $421,000 on 79 in Portugal (an industry record).

‘Analyzing’ success

Rookie “Analyze This” is the market leader in France, making a solid $1.7 million on 287, but was less compelling in Spain, clocking $577,000 on 154. The Robert De Niro/Billy Crystal comedy eased by 20% in the U.K. for a moderate $3.4 million in 10 days; cume is $47.3 million.

“The General’s Daughter” entered France with a so-so $1 million on 350 and saw similarly mild results in Argentina ($292,000 on 45), Belgium ($275,000 on 31), Sweden and Poland.

“The Mummy” levitated to $244.6 million, “The Matrix” climbed to $236.5 million, “Notting Hill” peaked at $205.8 million, “Wild Wild West” hit $90.3 million and “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me” reached $80.6 million.
